New hybrid London bus debuts

New hybrid London bus debuts

London Mayor Boris Johnson has unveiled an all-new London bus. It uses an efficient hybrid drivetrain that makes it the most fuel efficient bus ever to hit the capital.

Built by Wrightbus, the as-yet-nameless double-decker also sees the return of the traditional open rear platform, allowing passengers to jump on and off quickly.

It features two staircases to make embarking and disembarking quicker and the open back can be closed off if necessary.

Passenger comfort has been prioritised, too. The bus has a torque limiter in first gear to allow it to pull away smoothly - so falling over in the aisles should be a thing of the past.

It is packed with modern technology, including an aluminium spaceframe chassis similar in principle to that of the Audi R8 supercar.

The diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain uses a battery-powered motor at the rear to boost power. It also improves economy by making less work for the diesel engine. Noise will be lower than ever.

The battery is charged by a generator linked to the 4.5-litre diesel engine. Hybrid buses are already on the streets of London, but Wrightbus claims that this is the most efficient by some way.

Testing will begin in early 2011 at a closed track, before the bus hits the city's streets later that year. The current London bus will be gradually phased out from 2012 and this version will eventually make up the entire 8,000-strong fleet.

Woods claimed the top spot on a US list of 50 athletes for the seventh consecutive year, though his total earnings fell 10 per cent to £59.53 million, according to Sports Illustrated.

His total is also down 40 per cent from £84.15m in 2008.

The US magazine publishes separate lists for US and global athletes, but you can see the overall top 10 at the bottom of the article.

Tennis star Roger Federer, at £40.63m, bumped football player David Beckham from the top spot he had held the last two years on the international list.

On that international list, Federer jumped from number nine last year as his earnings doubled, while Beckham slipped to number three at £26.64m, behind FIFA world player of the year Lionel Messi at £28.95m.

Rounding out the international top five were Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo (£26.31m) and boxer Manny Pacquiao (£24.99m).

Federer was second overall in the rankings but Beckham is only seventh.

Overall, the average earnings for the entire US list of 50 athletes rose 11 per cent to a record £17.25m, and were up 1.7 per cent to £19.7m for 20 international stars.

Woods's earnings for the 2010 list are comprised of £13.5m in earnings and £46.08m in endorsements from such sponsors as Nike Inc and Electronic Arts Inc. Woods's endorsement earnings fell £14.48m from last year's list.

Woods's personal life took centre stage for fans after a car accident outside his Florida home last November brought to light extramarital affairs and led him to make a public apology. He has played several tournaments since his April return from a self-imposed, five-month exile but has yet to win.

Rival golfer Phil Mickelson came in second on the 2010 US list (third overall) at £40.56m, and the US top 10 included four players from the NBA, led by LeBron James at number four (£30.12m).

The US top 10 also included boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr (number three at £39.64m), two Major League Baseball stars, including Alex Rodriguez at number five (£24.34m), and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning of the National Football League (number nine at £20.28m).

Basketball player Allen Iverson, number eight on last year's US list, dropped entirely out of the top 50.

Tennis player Maria Sharapova was the only female athlete to make either list, ranking number 20 on the international list at £13.1m.

Overall Top 10

1. Tiger Woods - Golf (£59.527,723)

2. Roger Federer- Tennis (£40,627,103)

3. Phil Mickelson - Golf (£40,556,493)

RP named one of the best new travel destinations

CEBU, Philippines - Rich in natural resources, ancient culture and biodiversity, the Philippines was recently named by the National Geographic Magazine as one of the “25 Best New Travel Destinations in the World in 2010.”

According to a report, the November 2009 Adventure issue of the magazine stated that the Philippines has “as many islands as the Caribbean and some of the most spectacular reefs on the planet,” adding that travel organizations have “finally gotten wise.” It shared the country’s ancient cultures, structures and biodiversity as the one of the main attractions and a must-see for visitors.

Department of Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said that this is part of the department’s goal, which is to let the whole world know of the rich natural resources that the Philippines can offer.

“Part of the continuing development efforts of the department is to encourage and assist local governments to invest in the development of their tourism assets,” said Durano.

It was also shared in the report that the article on the magazine stated that Wilderness Travel, who are travelers that got reviews of tourist spots, will be coming to the Philippines in May of next year to check the “5,000-foot Cordillera Central then deep into the world’s most biodiverse marine environment.
The travelers has recognized the country’s “breathtaking hiking routes through ancient rice terraces and scenic mountain landscapes, cultural encounters with the Ifugao people, and world-class snorkeling in the “Coral Triangle.”

The acknowledgement of the country’s rich natural resources especially the mountain destinations and hiking trails is part of the country’s promotion which Durano said they are strengthening along with the other destinations, which the country is very rich with.

For Central Visayas alone, Durano said that “the Danao adventure park in Bohol is such a model.” —AJ de la Torre

A christmas special: Getting your house ready for christmas

Do your kids feel bad every time the holiday season comes because your house is dull? Well, it’s time to rev up the festive spirit again.

Steps

1. Have your child give you an idea of what they want on your house. Teamwork is always the best solution.

2. Look for the items in magazines. If they’re too expensive, or too big, look for something similar or look in another magazine to see if they have one that is cheaper.

3. Start planning. Once you have at least four decorations that match your child’s description, take a piece of paper and plan where to place everything.

4. Look through your front window to see what people can see through it. If the room is too big, place decorations like your tree, stockings and other decors in that room.

5. Show your children the decorations!

Tips

• Magazines at this time of year have decorations on sale that are usually pretty extravagant.

• When you hang your lights, get one of those poles that you hook the lights on to and then just let go of the button to put the lights on.

• Instead of blow-ups, try those light up reindeer, or something similar that is big and cute.

• If you want your house to be at least a little bit religious, try using white lights; if you want a colorful house, use colored lights!

Christmas in the Philippines

It’s officially Christmas!

Christmas is one of the most awaited events in the country. And although the Christmas season in the Philippines is the longest, starting as early as September, Christmas officially starts with the first Misa de Gallofor most people, especially among Catholics.

Misa de Gallo a Spanish phrase which means Rooster’s Mass; otherwise, meaning “dawn Mass.” It is said that the Rooster’s Mass got its name because of the legend that a rooster was among the first to witness the birth of Jesus Christ, and was the one who announced it.

In the Philippines, Misa de Gallo is a custom that lasts for nine days, starting on the dawn of December 16 up to December 24, with Masses usually starting at around 4 a.m. The practice started during the Spanish colonial period. The dawn Masses were initially intended for farmers who wanted to attend Christmas Mass but could not leave their fields.

Today, Misa de Gallo is a family affair. Families would gather as early as 3 a.m. to attend the dawn Masses. Even the younger generation has learned to attend the Masses even if they have classes in the morning. This is because there is a belief that attending the nine-day Masses will make wishes or favors come true. Good health, a Christmas wish, or perhaps a new love are just some of the wishes that are prayed for by those who attend the Misa de Gallo.

In the Luzon area, puto bumbong (a purple colored rice pastry, seasoned with grated coconut and brown sugar) and tsokolate (hot cocoa drink) are the famous delicacies sold outside the church as early snacks for churchgoers. Here in Cebu, churchgoers usually have painit, or early morning snacks, of bibingka (rice flour and egg based cake, cooked using coals on top of and under the pastry), puto maya and sikwate (hot chocolate drink) at food stalls near the church or in their homes. Puto bumbong, however, is getting to be a famous delicacy in Cebu, especially because these are now served in hotels and restaurants.

On Christmas Eve, Filipino families attend the Misa de Aguinaldo or the Mass celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, at 10 p.m. After the Mass, families then partake of the Noche Buena meal, which usually consists of lechon, hamon, cheeses, a variety of salads, pasta, embotido and sweets.

Christmas in the Philippines is truly a family celebration. It is the Filipino family’s way of celebrating the birth of Christ by sharing a joyous meal...together!

toyad diay

Dear Ismat:

I WAS driven to share with you important things about me because I know that like so many people whose minds had been enlightened by your advises, I’ll also be one of them. Ismat, tawaga lang kog si Mr. Lihim tungod kay gikan pa sa akong pagkabata nag-edad og 11 ma-attract na man ko sa akong isigkaingon. I blamed sometimes one incident when I was 11.

Usa ka silingan namo teenager male, had sex with me. Iyang gigamit ang akong kamot sa pagpaduwa sa iyang kinatawo.

Diha-diha nibati kog himaya sa sex ug sugod adto ma-attract na ko og pipila nga males nga ganahan sad ko.

Motuo ka o di, Ismat, karon I am 33 ug virgin pa. No experience in love relationships sa male or female. Tungod, kay tago man gud ko ug masculine look sad ko, medyo kadudahan sa uban kay until now I have no partner. Usahay, maglibog ko kay naay usahay ganahan kaayo ko motan-aw niya ug mobigay na jud ko. Pero sa among panag-uban-uban sa kadugayan sa tanto nakong pugong mawala man sad akong gibati as in hanaw jud.

Ngilngig man gud ko mo control sa akong emotion. Sa babae, Ismat, naay daghang gwapa, pero wa man jud koy drive nga makuha sila as my GF, but as friends only. Tambagi ko, Ismat, kon unsay angay kong buhaton. Akong sitwasyon karon masulub-on, kulang ug depress. I feel very depressed especially when I think about my male friends whom I love before very badly in secret one at a time unya wa ko makasulti sa akong feeling for fear nga ila kong i-reject and laugh at me. Some suspected ug nagsugod nag likay nako. Di man sad ko ganahan ug malipay makig uban-uban sa grupo sa mga 3rd sex, bastosan ko and I don’t like to look like a female. Ismat, unsa akong angay buhaton in general aron makabaton ko og stable sa emotion ug lovelife. Ganahan sad unta ko makaila-ila og friends or groups who will accept me.

umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh-eh

I RECENTLY bought a new umbrella, after deliberating for several months whether to buy one or not.

After getting drenched several times during heavy downpour while doing field work, I finally decided to buy a new umbrella.

I don’t normally buy umbrellas because of the horrible timing of my previous purchases. In the past, I bought umbrellas when the rainy season was over.

Over the years, I’ve managed to collect and lose countless umbrellas.

Some were plaid, others had horrendous floral prints (I’ve had tons of ugly floral printed umbrellas) and others had strange cartoon characters on them. Others were either plain black or dark blue.

I don’t usually use umbrellas because I like walking in the rain. But since I cannot walk in the rain everyday, I realized that I seriously need an umbrella.

So I bought one. A nice green one.

Though green is not my favorite color, my umbrella’s particular shade of green reminds me of green apples. And I like green apples.

So one morning, my spiffy new umbrella and I hit the streets with hopes of meeting up with a news source.

Since the sun’s glare was unbearable (and to quote a good friend: “Ugh, it was so init ba!”, insert a disgruntled expression and feeble attempts of fanning your face with hands), I decided to use my wonderfully green, brand new umbrella to spare me from the UV rays.

For a second, the famed “Umbrella” song came to mind and briefly, I hoped that it would rain. It would be just wonderful to get caught under the rain with my new umbrella in hand. It would make a very good “I’m singing in the rain” moment, too.

However, back to reality and the very hot weather I was caught under. I didn’t even get five minutes of enjoyment with what little protection my umbrella gave me from the heat when, out of nowhere, somebody whacks it from behind.

And by whacking it, my wonderfully new umbrella’s rod hit me on the side of my face.

Oh, joy.

As I whirled around, I screamed and stumbled backwards when I came face to face with an old man trying to once again slap my umbrella out of my hands.

“What the *bleep* is wrong with you?! Using an umbrella when it’s not raining! (Insert loads of expletives),” he screamed, waving his arms around.

Normally, I’d fight back and scream bloody murder for scaring me half to death. But all I ever managed was a feeble “sorry” and I quickly stumbled away from him.

He stalked off, muttering to himself a string of cuss words.

I followed him down the street minutes later, hoping not to cross his path again. Only to see him slap an umbrella out of some middle-aged woman’s hands.

Ah, our poor umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh-eh.

dream

I’VE always advocated for the dream.

And not because I believe it is easy to dream. Or easy to make one’s dreams come true. But if I root for the dream, it is because dreams signify hope and more than anything else, it is hope that keeps us alive. Of course it is not enough to be alive. The essence of life, after all, does not lie in being alive but rather in living life.

And that, I think, is harder than making one’s dreams come true.

Even as a child, I was not a morning person. I hated getting up early for school. And all the way through college, I naively imagined that when my life as a student ended, I would be the happiest person on Earth. My life would be completely pain-free. How ridiculously naïve of me to think that getting up early in the morning was the hardest part of life.

Life did not get easier with age. It only got more challenging. Today, I do not have to worry about getting up early in the morning but only because I haven’t gone to sleep yet when the early risers of the city are just awakening.

Now I look back and laugh at how my simple, childlike mind worked. I could not wait to be an adult. No one would tell me what to do. I would go as I pleased. Do as I pleased. I would live my dreams. And I would be the success I always believed I was going to be.

I cannot lie and say all my dreams came true.

But that doesn’t hurt me. Not anymore. With age, you somehow become more accepting of what cannot be. Perhaps because with age, you realize there is not just one dream and that more important than making all your dreams come true is to never let go of all your dreams.

I never look back and imagine what might have been. I believe that if you have found contentment in your life, you may look to the past and the future but you will always live in the present. Contentment doesn’t mean giving up your dreams. On the contrary, it means finding joy in-between the realization of your dreams.

I live. I love. I cry. I celebrate. I am no saint. But I do what I can to make life better for myself as well as for others. I don’t always succeed. Sometimes, I am gravely misunderstood if not unappreciated. But it is the certainty of life after death that keeps me alive, that fuels me to live, that gives me the courage to face the end, knowing it is simply the beginning of something else.

I’ve been taken for a ride. My heart’s been broken many times. I’ve been betrayed by friend and reviled by foe. But I refuse to give up. God never gave up on me. Am I the success I always believed I was going to be?

I have found peace, significance, contentment. And I still dream. This may not be the success I envisioned for myself—but, hey, I’m not complaining.

The secret is to never give up on your dreams.

LETTER FROM AN UNBORN CHILD

Dear mama, I know you will be surprised to receive this letter from me. I’m now three months old, living under your heart as big as your thumb, but already a real person just as a crumb of bread is truly bread. I have a heart beating with love for you, a brain that is starting to think of how I can make you happy. I have a mouth eager to kiss you, and eager to talk. Iknow what my first word will be,” MOMMY”. I’m growing everyday. My arms and legs and fingerprints are taking shape. Funny how small my fingers are. With them, I’ll be able to stroke your hair. My hair is growing. It is smooth, bright and shiny. I can see even in the dark. When you bring me into the world, it will be full of sunshine and flowers. But what I want more than anything is to see you. How do you look, MOMMY? In six months, I’llbe out of this dark place. I’m just to thrilled. Aren’t you, MOMMY? Why are you crying? I saw you talking to yourparents. What did they say to you? I heard thescolding you, shouting: “ you’re not a good daughter! What will our relatives and neighbors say? It would be better if you had died in your childhoodthan bring shame to our family name. We will disinherit you unless you have your baby aborted!” MOMMY, why did you just nod your head? Why didn’t you even fight for my life, my right to live, myright to be born? If you give birth to me, I promiseto make you happy. MOMMY, give me a chance to see the light of the day,to see the sunshine and flowers. You cannot right awrong with another wrong. Tell grandfather andgrandmother, I love them. Although I haven’t seen them yet, l’ll make them happy too. Promise.MOMMY. Have pity on me. help, I feel all the pain, my bones and limbs have been crushed. My skinburning from the salt solution…ahhhh! Howexcruciating the pain of the blades against myumbilical cord. I’m bleeding. I’m drowning in my own blood…I’m dying…help…. MOMMY…h…..e….l….p…
